Epidemiological study of arterial hypertension and electrocardiographic changes - 15 year follow-up
The aim of the study was to examine the effect of elevated blood pressure on ECG findings at rest and after exercise. 180 subjects who were grouped into persistantly hypertensive, periodically hypertensive and control subjects were followed up for 15 years. In males, rise in frequency with age is noted among persistently hypertensive subjects after exercise. In women ST-segment changes are less common among those with AH and they occur more frequently in control group. The prevalence of arrhythmias over a 15-year period is similar in persistently hypertensive and control subjects of both sexes. While at the beggining of the study 1 in 29 subjects had HR impairment after exercise, 15 years later 8 men with persistent hypertension had this abnormality. Of 28 control subjects who were exercise tested, one had arrhythmia, while 15 years later there were 5. Most changes occured over the last 4 years(significant).
