Limits of Sustainable Energy Development in Croatia
Due to present political and financial constraints, large-scale and already proven conventional technologies are about the only energy projects in Croatia that can find financing. Thus, Croatian mid-term energy strategy relies on fossil fuelled plants, partly financed from abroad. At the same time, due to awaken environmental concern, customers much more prefer clean energy sources over fossil fuels. However, although they in theory do support green energy options, people are reluctant to make environmentally sound changes in their every-day life, because of scarce economic resources and lack of promotion programs. It proves that environmental awakeness alone is not sufficient a driving force to start conducting an environmentally sound energy policy. Rather, there are more factors involved, the most important being the existence of political will, availability of capital, technical feasibility and possible scope of sustainable energy technologies, as well as promotion and consumers' willingness to participate in sustainable energy programs. Much of the Croatian energy future will depend on its international political rating and consequently, on its economic credibility.
