Transient global amnesia and migraine

A group of 42 patients with a diagnosis transient global amnesia (TGA) were prospectively included in the study and followed up during a period of 12-82 months. Pathophysiological mechanisms of TGA attack have not yet been clearly defined. Most authors favor the vascular or ischemic hypothesis. TGA as a form of temporal epilepsy has been abandoned. The migraine theory is founded on the common basic mechanism of TGA and migraine, and on the transitory character of both states. The authors established the highest incidence in the 60-69 age group, with the presence of provoking factors in 42.8% of the cases ; 57.1% of the patients had risk factors for cerebrovascular disease, and 7.1% of them suffered from transient ischemic attacks, which led to conclusion that 64.2% of the cases could be explained by the vascular theory. In 28.5% of the subjects, a correlation between migraine and TGA which could support the migraine theory of TGA appearrance was found, but was not statistically significant.
