New insights into the functioning of dye-doped OLED's from model simulations.
We present a theoretical and experimental study of multilayer organic light-emitting diodes (OLED s) with a partially doped emission layer. For this purpose OLED devices were fabricated using the laser dye derivatives 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2- methyl-6-{; 2-[(4-diphenylamino) phenyl] ethyl};-4Hpyran (DCM-TPA) with electron trapping capability and 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-[2-(julolidin- 9-yl)phenyl]ethenyl]-4H-pyran (DCM-II) with both electron and hole trapping capabilities as dopants in a standard architecture. Our well established MOLED device simulation model was used to interpret the data and to gain insight into the influence of the partially doped layer on the transport behavior and the radiative charge recombination distribution as a function of applied bias. In the case of the exclusively electron trapping dopant, a blueshift of the emission color with increasing bias is observed which we find to be due to a splitting of the recombination zone.
