Prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in a high-risk zone for multiple sclerosis (Gorski Kotar, Croatia)
An analysis was made of the prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in subjects from a high risk zone for multiple sclerosis, Gorski Kotar, Croatia, using an indirect immunofluorescence assay. A total of 61 clinically definite multiple sclerosis patients and 84 controls participated in the study. The participants were divided in two groups. The first group consisted of patients and controls who were native-born residents of Gorski Kotar, while the second group consisted of native-born non residents of the area studied. The difference in the prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in the groups examined was not significant. These results indicate that Borrelia burgdorferi is not a significant factor in the etiopathogenesis of multiple sclerosis in a high risk zone. Our preliminary study of Borrelia burgdorferi antibody prevalence among the domestic and wild animals of the region, supported this wiew.
