Tackling Disagreements in Sustainable Planning of the Croatian Power System
Due to present political and financial constraints, large-scale and already proven conventional technologies are about the only energy projects in Croatia that can find financing. Thus, Croatian mid-term energy strategy relies on fossil-fuelled plants, partly financed from abroad. Although foreign capital guarantees compliance with environmental requirements, residents fear from the negative impact on tourism that coal power plants in the coastal region might cause. Still, although people in theory do support green energy options, they are reluctant to make environmentally sound changes in their every-day life, because of scarce economic resources and lack of promotion programs. In the process of establishing sustainable development strategy there should be more experts involved, helping to enlighten country-specific limitations and improve communication between public and decision-makers.
