Malposition and loss of the left mandibular permanent canine in a male wild boar (Sus scrofa L.)
Few cases of pathological alterations of the continuously growing, rootless permanent canines (tusks) of male wild boars and the alveolar bone surrounding these teeth have been described in the scientific literature. In this paper we present a case of complete loss of the left mandibular tusk in a male wild boar from the Slovak Republic. Loss of the tusk is attributed to a malposition, indicated by the location of the opening of its alveolus, and consequent trauma to the tooth. The traumatic impact is regarded to have caused a fracture of the tusk and a severe damage to the periodontium, followed by bacterial infection and inflammation. This led to a chronic osteomyelitis with destruction of the alveolar bone, expansion of the socket of the tusk, and the formation of a bone abscess.
