Contaminated Sites Issue in the Republic of Croatia: The Beginning of a Systematic Approach
The Republic of Croatia, as all the Central and Eastern Europe countries in transitions, has been faced with many problems, especially economic and social ones. War has caused an number of new problems. Therefore, the establishment of modern and efficient systems in the fields of economy, finances, judiciary, public health, etc. is a necessity. Environmental protection problems are also addressed in a systematic approach. It is clear that contaminanted cites exist in Croatia, which are consequence of the operation of large industrial facilities such as fertilizer production, coke plants, rafineries, thermoelectric power plants or are related to accidents: leakage of contaminated wastewaters, leakes, in oil pipelines. Since remedial preparations are very expensive, APO in comporation with the State Directorate for the Protection of Nature and Environment, has put much efford into this issue and has already started a systematic approach aiming to create a list of priority sites for clean-up. The current overview of the situation and activities performed so far will be presented in this paper.
