RVS as European Trend Towards Solution of Capacity of the European Air Traffic

The biggest problem of air traffic in Europe is capacity, i. e. congestion of airspace. One of the first moves towards solution will be reduced vertical and horizontal separations on existing route structure, using very accurate means of navigating. The eight-fold increase in capacity that follows from halving separation minima in both dimensions is, after all, arithmetically compelling - as experience on the North Atlantic will show more fully when RVSM, introduced in 1997., are followed by RHSM early next century. RVSM will be applied over the whole Europe too, resulting in more flight levels becoming available above 29.000 feet. Airborne technology needed for reduced separations is evolving rapidly and includes improved altimetry, accurate SATNAV positioning and automatic position reporting via data link (ADS). Greater track flexibility will lead to direct routing and ultimately, it is hoped, Free Flight. Aircraft that are not suitably CNS-equiped will have to be protected by larger airspace "bubbles" and won't be allowed the most favourable transatlantic tracks, especially at the well-pronounced peak travel times. Eurocontrol expects that, as airlines see reduced separations' benefits, they will feel encouraged to fit the equipment to their fleet, particularly ADS and satcom/databus.
