Environments for preparing structured and dynamic - hypermedial - presentation of knowledge

Toward more flexible man-and-machine-in-the-same-time knowledge representation, in usual (for chemistry, mathematics or music) or some new but more or less complex way, information technology is developing structured textual representation of computerized data. Based on W3C (http://www.w3c.org) intention and standardization effort, most such (standardized) data &#8211; with which you want to manipulate by "cut&paste" - are represented along with some type of structured Markup Language (ML). Although their representation must be readable in pure ASCII editor, many environments, or so called Integrated Developing Environments (IDE), have been developed for time-saving manipulation with data elements. Such elements are ASCII characters syntactically compounded in tags, e.g., <HEAD>, transmitted over stateless protocol, with other textually readable content, object scripting possibilities, Java applets or other references of multimedia and hypermedia contents. While all representations of Markup Languages are free, most of environments (IDE's) are not. Of course, many system administrators do their complex job very well, using editing ASCII files under various directories with vi or some other editor, near-graphical or web-administrative interfaces, and web-content developers in many situation use whatever text editor there is. But ever more often, other knowledge-manipulation-situation content creators, with enough fluent information knowledge, wish to use some structured data (knowledge) presentation tool, some IDE to meet their needs. Although we sometimes get angry with these tools, we can say that every such new tool aims at position of alpha and omega of the tools that human mind invented for controlling numerous elements. We can say that they are cultural milestone and specific part of information and communication success in representing knowledge. Let us list a few: We can all recall troff or Tex and we have all heard for first wysiswyg queen of typographic materials and nice kerning on PC platform - Ventura, later Corel Ventura - the SGML based environment with separated text and style from their early start in DOS GEM graphical interface. Ventura environment was first designed for preparing (large amounts of) printed material and later for exporting typografic content in HTML and CSS files. Today, you can more often find QuarkXpress or DocBook in so-called desktop publishing (DTP) environments, and for everyday use so-called word processors, such as MSWord, StarrOffice Word, WordPerfect or Kword. Business people, teachers and conference presenters like easy-to-use Microsoft PowerPoint companionship to help them with their spoken, real-time presentations with proprietary .ppt or less-effective web files. Quick use of browser integrated web-composers can help in preparing HTML pages, eye-catching CD-multimedia and web-proprietary files created with Macromedia with stages metaphor and other generating environment, or Adobe presenting or e-book ready proprietary .pdf files, or streaming ready RealNetworks video and audio files with interactivity based on SMIL markup language. But standards change and permutation limiting based on Schema became better than Document Type Definition. When you create a model of web-service with some sort of XML language (for example: vml, cml, mathml, newsml, wml, HL7? and many others), you need integrated environment support in designing and editing all XML technologies, including XML validation, Schema and DTD design, and XSL transformation. Most of them you can find in XML Spy IDE if you create on Microsoft platform. And when you need server-side communication using large amount of same and typical data and automation with web-generated selected data, you need application server components, maybe free PHP+MySQL, Perl, expensive Oracle application environment, ASP.NET with Visual Studio Tool, or free "Tomcat" application server based on (Sun's) Java Server Page open standard, or other server-oriented environments for some new web-services. They have all been intended to work with standardized structured data, which we need in computer-based representation of structured knowledge. They all are intended for preparing interactive tele-presentation over the Net, in as short a period of time as possible. Many of them use similar organization of elements and metaphors, which can help us (re)use them.
