Present conditions and restoration of protective and drainage hydrotechnical works and systems in the Drava and Danube basin in Croatia
The principal of hydrotechnical construction objectives are protection from water, water use and water pollution control. However, their design and construction concept should also serve the purpose of protection of the environment and of human and natural resources. Within the part of the Drava river basin in Croatia ot 7 015 sq.km. one must consider the direct catchment area of Danube river of 2 120 sq.km. as an inseparable hydrographic unity of 9 135 sq.km. Unfortunately, the hydrotechnical works had been inadequate and were heavily damaged or destroyed by various Serbian paramilitary formations and the former Yugoslav National Army during the war in 1991 and 1992. During the occupation of Easter Slavionia, Baranja and Western Srijem ( 1991-1997) there was no regular maintenance of the hydrotechnical systems. This resulted in their reduced capacity, compared to the design and construction capacity and thus in deteriorated environmental conditions due to the impossibility of control and management of the water regime for human and economic purposes. The reconstruction programme pays particular attention to the conservation of water resources as well as other natural and human resources.
