Renascence Gardens in the Dubrovnik Area
The author examines the features of the Renascence gardens in the Dubrovnik area, which were built in the 16th century. He describes the development and flourishing of Dubrovnik from the 13th century, which culminated in high material prosperity and cultural level in the 16th century. As a consequence of this, many luxury villas and their corresponding gardens were built on the outskirsts of towns and rural areas. Nowadays the remains of these gardens can still be investigated, due to the fact that architectural structure of some them been preserved. The characteristics of these gardens are described in the paper. Their two main components were stone and vegetation, rarely water. The author compares the Dubrovnik gardens with the Italian ones of the same period. The function and characteristics of the pergola are examined in detail. The number of historic gardens registrered in the area in question is seventy, and the author mentions some that are the seat of public bodies at present. (1977)
