Substance And Alcohol Dependence In Pregnancy.

Substance dependence problem is one of the most significant problems of modern society and medicine. Main characteristic of dependence is existence of numerous cognitive, behavioral and physiological symptoms, which points out the fact that person continues to take substance despite serious problems associated with it’ s use. The pattern of regular use is established, which causes range of psychical and physical problems and damage to organism. Dependence in pregnancy is a particular problem. It requires physician’ s increased attention because it is a problem that often requires urgent intervention. Being a phenomenon that appertains to the domain of urgent conditions, specialists of many fields, i. e. psychiatrists, gynecologists, family physicians, specialists in clinical medicine, neonatologists are confronted with it. Good coordination is necessary to help decrease the possibility of numerous complications for pregnant woman and her unborn child – increased morbidity and mortality of mothers and children, which exists if not adequately treated. Population of pregnant women is particularly vulnerable and at high risk, because of dangers for mother’ s health and because of possible consequences /immediate and long-term/ for child. It is therefore considered to be one of the public health priorities. Obstetric treatment of pregnant dependent women is complicated by psychosocial problems that make optimal care more difficult. Treatment is interdisciplinary and requires coordinated cooperation of gynecologist, psychiatrist, neonatologist, family physician, social worker and other medical staff. Basis of successful implementation of program against substance abuse in pregnancy has to be prevention.
