The Changing Faces of Canada
Canada’s “faces”, quite literally, have changed dramatically since the mid-1960s. Some 2.8 million immigrants arrived in the country in the 1968–1988 period. Whereas in the late 1950s, 84.3 percent of immigrants to Canada were born in Europe, by the late 1980s only 28.6 percent of arrivals were of European birth.1 Such radically altered immigration patterns have had predictable effects on the face of Canadian society.
