EFFECT OF GnRH ON SERUM LH RESPONSE IN ATRAZINE-TREATED MATURE FEMALE PIGS
The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of porcine LH in serum after single intravenous administration of GnRH in atrazine-treated pigs. Experiments were carried out in 15 mature female pigs of known breed, matched by age and body mass. The length of estrous cycle was carefully observed for 2 cycles in each animal before the experiment. From the onset of estrus the pigs were given 1 mg atrazine per kg body mass in feed daily for 20 days of estrous cycle. On the last day of treatment, the atrazine-treated animals were given 100 microgram GnRH intravenously. Blood samples for LH determination were collected from the control group, atrazine-treated group, and GnRH-injected atrazine-treated group at 0, 20, 30, 40 and 90 min.Serum LH concentration was determined by RIA.Study results showed the serum LH response to be significantly suppressed by the administration of atrazine. This suppression of serum LH was reversed by intravenous GnRH administration to atrazine-treated female pigs. These data suggested the chloro-s-triazine herbicide atrazine to affect the hypothalamic-pituitary axis in mature female pigs.
