Evaluation of inclusive workshop in regular classes
Aim was to improve interaction between students with special needs and their peers in regular classes through an inclusive workshops program. This program is structured to develop communication skills, self-respect and non-violent conflict resolution and to improve tolerance and acceptance of differences between students. The sample consisted of 17 students with special needs aged 13 to 14 years, of both sexes, divided into experimental (N=11) and control (N=6) groups. The inclusive workshops program was conducted in regular classes, with all students, and had a total duration of 5 months. Relationships with peers were assessed using a Croatian adaptation of Student Rating Scale: Peers which is a part of BRP-2 battery. The inclusive workshops program has resulted in statistically significant improvement in self-perceived acceptable behaviour in contact with peers. The application of inclusive workshops reduces rejection and isolation of students with special needs in regular schools. Workshops activities result in mutually positive interaction experience for pupils with special needs and their peers, which is a key to developing social acceptance.
