Numerical simulation of damagining in concrete
Modelling of the so-called "softening" materials (like concrete) presents some peculiarities like localisation of strain and bifurcation of results in a post-peak regime. A simple example clearly describes all the mentioned difficulties. Short description of microplane model for quasi-brittle materials is presented which is the basis for a 3-D computer program used to simulate damage processes in concrete structures. Model description and results of a large 3-D numerical simulation are presented. On the basis of comparisons of numerical results of simulation with experimental data it can be concluded that the presented model can be used to reduce the number of experiments on concrete materials (or even eliminate them in some cases).
