Modification of plywood using composite materials

The subject of this study was the influence of composite materials on the stress distribution in certain plies of plywood panel. The stiffness and the displacement, respectively, were taken as the basic criteria in order to determine the appropriateness of composite materials for plywood modification. In addition, the combinations of fibreglass implementation into plywood panel, with regard to different wood species were analysed. Laboratory plywood panels, homogeneous and composite, were prepared and the stress distribution was analysed using the finite element method. According to the results obtained the influence of fibreglass to the increased stiffness of the panel increase is evident, as a result of strain and Von Mises stress decrease in veneer plies of composite plywood. In addition, a greater impact of fibreglass on the stress modification was established on poplar plywood panels than on beech plywood panels.
