Effect of CaCl2 and CaBr2 on the Lemna minor growth and its modification by diltiazem and EGTA
Optimal calcium concentration is needed for normal plant growth. Diltiazem and EGTA decrease the concentration of available calcium: diltiazem by lowering permeability of calcium channels located on plasma membrane and EGTA by chelating calcium in nutrient solution. The aim of our investigation was to define the effects of CaCl2 and CaBr2 on the growth of duckweed Lemna minor L. Influence of diltiazem and EGTA addition to these solutions on the results of our experiment was also investigated. CaCl2 and CaBr2 in concentration 0.025 M stimulated the growth of duckweed: plant number, fresh weight and relative area of plants were increased in comparison to control. Tested chemicals in concentration 0.075 M inhibited the growth: plant number, fresh weight and relative area were decreased. Addition of diltiazem and EGTA into the tested solutions did not influence the results significantly. It implies that changes of Lemna minor growth caused by CaCl2 and CaBr2 could be the consequence of increased concentrations of Cl- and Br- ions in nutrient solutions.
