Historical Review of Exploitation and Utilization of Stone in Croatia
The utilisation of stone as a natural raw material has been one of the longest lasting economic activities in Croatia. The evidence of this are numerous ancient buildings which are "woven" into our modern towns of Poreč, Pula, Rab, Zadar, Šibenik, Trogir, Hvar, Korčula, Dubrovnik, etc. Exploitation of stone for construction and stone mason's works in Croatia dates back to the Pre-antique age reaching the top development in the Antique Age, when Greek colonies were formed on the seaside and islands, as well as during the Roman times especially. A number of epigrams are evidence of developed stone mason's trade in the Roman Empire, although it was known during the Greek-Illyrian period too. From that period there are many material remnants of construction work especially the carved stones built in the defence walls of towns. The oldest known stone buildings are Illyrian tumuli made of stone without lime as binder and stone-panelled graves. The used stone was found in the nature and was uncut. The constructionally more developed buildings date back to the Greek-Illyrian period - for example the wall ruins of the Greek colonies on the islands of Vis and Hvar, where local stone was used. That period, 6th cent. B.C. also comprises the remnants of the Hallstatt culture such as stone sculptures probably from a sanctuary and a part of a sculpture of a horseman.
