Seismites in Pontian sands of Krško Basin (Slovenia)

Krško basin in southern Slovenia is historically, as well as prehistorically seismically active region. Geotectonically, it is situated at the western rim of the Pannonian basin and represents southern part of Sava folds which were formed as a result of Neogene N-S compression and folding. We have studied paleoseismicity of this area since 1992, and studied sand pits and an open coal pit with exposed sands of Pontian age. Pontian sands were deposited in lacustrine, fluvial and eolian environments on the basically subhorizontal depositional surface. Small scale semi-consolidated sediment deformation structures were recognized in three different stratigraphical intervals bounded with undisturbed sediments. Nine different types of deformation structures are recognized by their shape: 1. convex, dome-shaped structures with micro flower-structure 2. concave, half-graben structures bounded by micro normal faults 3. cone-shaped complex structures (up to 30 cm high) with micro thrust faults 4. staircase, normal or reverse micro-faults with up to 10 cm throw 5. micro box folds 6. flexures, sometimes faulted, with throw of 1-2 cm 7. micro nappe-structures with up to 50 cm thrust 8. water-escape (dish) structures, with sand-filled pipes up to 50 cm high 9. collapse structures with a system of low-angle normal faults The size (amplitude) of the deformation structures ranges from several centimeters up to 1 meter, and their lateral spacing spans from 1 to 5 meters. The throw of these small-scale normal- and reverse faults typically reaches 1 to 15 cm. We interpret these structures as seismites, soft-sediment deformations which were created during three different Pontian seismic events.
