Bivalve recovery after a mass mortality in the autumn of 1989 in the northern Adriatic Sea
A summer phytoplancton bloom in 1989 followed by autumn severe bottom oxygen drop caused mass mortality of benthic organisms i the offshore northern Adriatic Sea. Scube divers recorded an extensive mortality in the area of about 1.200 km2, while ower 3.500 km2 of the neighboring area bottom communities were less affected. In the affected area, among dead benthic organisms numerous empty shells of Atrina fragilis, Chlamys sp., Ensis ensis, Laevicardium sp., Pecten jacobaeus, Solecurtus strigilatus were recorded. The bivalve recolonization was studied in the area affected by mortality, at stations 005, 007 and 107, where bottom surface samples totaling 0.4 m2 were taken monthly by a Van Veen 0.1 m2 grab for a two year period. Data collected at station 107 in December 1986, June 1988 and August 1989 were used for comparison.
