Hosts and Distribution of Viscum album L. ssp. album in Croatia and Slovenia

Viscum album L. ssp. album is a semi-parasite on deciduous trees and shrubs. In order to make a list of hosts and map the distribution of V. album ssp. album in Croatia and Slovenia field research have been carried out and the herbaria have been surveyed. In Croatia and Slovenia V. album ssp. album occurred on 58 taxa (54 species, 2 cultivars and 2 hybrids). In Croatia there were 51 hosts (33 autochthonous and 14 allochthonous species, 2 cultivars and 2 hybrids). In Slovenia there were 25 hosts (21 autochthonous and 4 allochthonous species). There were 18 hosts common to both countries, 33 hosts were found only in Croatia and 7 hosts were found only in Slovenia. The hosts belonged to 13 families. Most of them (19 species) were from the Rosaceae family. Then followed Salicaceae (7 species, 2 cultivars and 2 hybrids), Aceraceae and Betulaceae (5 species each), Fagaceae and Tiliaceae (3 species each), Hippocastanaceae, Ulmaceae, Oleaceae, Juglandaceae and Fabaceae (2 species each), Moraceae and Viscaceae (1 species each). All hosts have been already recorded in the literature, except Alnus japonica (Thunb.) Steud., Amelanchier lamarckii F. G. Schroed. and Crataegus nigra Waldst. et Kit. Autochthonous species which could be included into the most frequent hosts were: Malus domestica Borkh., Populus nigra L., Pyrus communis L., Salix alba L. and Tilia cordata Mill. The most frequent allochthonous hosts were Acer saccharinum L. and Robinia pseudoacacia L. The distribution of this mistletoe was scattered, which was due to the scattered distribution of hosts, local conditions, movement of birds-vectors etc. A continued distribution could be found only in part of the distribution of narrow-leaved ash (Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl).
