The Efficiency of Natural Correctors in the Improvement of Degraded Forest Soils in Tyrol
The paper reports the results of the eight years studies of the spruce (Picea abies K.) as a test species under various treatment conditions on the experimental plot in Fuegenberg, Tyrol. The aim of the project was to rejuvenate the spruce forest by means of forestry measures and use of natural soil correctors. The experiment started in 1993 when five corrective substances were applied, among them natural zeolite which main component is clinoptilolite based tuff ; soil corrector based on MgO and CaO ; and soil corrector which main component is the Penicillium chrysogen mycelium. Measurements of height, height increase, neck tree diameter and phytomass of the test species were carried out in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2001. The soil complex was also surveyed. The ANOVA and regression technique with dummy variables were used to analyse dendrometric parameters in relation to different soil treatments. Given results prove the efficiency of using special natural correctors in resolving problems of "Waldsterben" and thereby improving the forests' quality in economic and tourist terms.
