Sequence Batch Reactor Application for Efficient Wastewater Treatment of the City of Osijek and Associated Industries
Chemical wastewater quality of the city Osijek and associated industries indicate low organic impurities of the above-mentioned collective water that ranges from 320 to 390 mg of oxygen per liter ; expressed as COD value. Ammonia nitrogen value in the mentioned collective wastewater range from 38 to 56 mg per liter and pohosphorus from 6 to 10 mg per liter. This is unfavourable ratio of organic ingredients agains ingredients with nitrogen and phosphorus for implementation of classic biological process of nitrification and denitification with phosphorus removal. In such wastewater pattern, active sludge weakly procreates and an appearance of filament bacteria is common that make sludge floating, thus survival of nitrogenic autotrophic bacteria responsible for nitrogen components removal is low (rinsing out of processing system). Since European directives demand for low concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus in treated wastewater and its ready quality, the activity of mixed bacteria culture selected has been investigated for efficient treatment of collective wastewater of city Osijek and associated industries. Selected bacteria culture is in a form granules that consist of autotrophic and heterotrphic bacteria (3+3). By use of SB (sequence batch) reactor in temperature range from 15 to 25 degree centigrade and retention time from 4 to 8 hours the following quality of wastewater has been achieved: pH 7.2-7.4 ; COD 23-35 mgO2/L ; BOD 15-2235 mgO2/L ; and N-NH4 ; P-PO4. These results have been achieved by use of steady of biomass granule of mixed quality. As additional source of carbon for the process of denitrification, wastewater from the sugar production has been proven succesful.
