THE ROLE OF STANDARDIZATION IN CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGEMENT
On May 7, 1985 the European Community Council adopted a resolution on a new approach to technical harmonization and standards (85/C 136/01), which was designed to eliminate technical barriers which were obstructing the creation of a Single Market. Technical barriers are caused by disconformities of standards and technical regulations as well as by unbalanced requests for testing and certification of the quality of products manufactured for international trade. Strong European standardization system has been developed through the new approach that has contributed to the safety and health protection, the industry competitiveness and functioning of the single market. Application of standards in performing construction projects and the ISO certification of construction companies contribute to the systematic effort for reduction of variability and deviations within the project activities. Quality management has been recognized as a key issue in the construction projects’ performance improvement.
