Biodegradation of Olive Mill Wastewater by Means of Selected Strains of Yeasts
Two-step biodegradation of olive mill wastewater by means of Trichosporon cutaneum (1st step of biodegradation) and Geotrichum candidum (2nd step of biodegradation) was investigated. Experiments were carried out at defined parameters: dissolved oxygen concentration 2.5-3.5 mg/L, pH-value 6.0-6.5 and tempearture 20-22 oC for 1st step of biodegradation and dissolved oxygen concentration 0.2-0.4 mg/L and tempearture 20-22 oC for 2nd step of biodegradation. During the 1st step of biodegradation by means of Trichosporon cutaneum was achieved 84% COD and 95% phenolic compound removal, while in the 2nd step of biodegradation by means of Geotrichum candidum were removed remained phenolic compounds and reduced wastewater culour. As well the used yeast biomass has shown good settling quality and therefore good separation from biodegraded wastewater.
