On Neoliberalsm (in the Republic of Croatia)
The free market has not yet begun functioning in Croatia (in the full sense of the term), and we already wish to avoid submitting ourselves to economic imperatives. The criticism of economic neoliberalism in Croatia is thus premature. The capitalist path we are treading is not the path of economic liberalism. The experience of economic neoliberalism is probably yet to come. Our experience of transition is a calvary of ‘ primitive’ capitalism taking place in an environment that is legally and institutionally unsettled. The liberalism of the 20th century i.e. neoliberalism does not imply a legal and institutional vacuum. A government doing nothing and calmly observing ‘ the fight of wolves in a free market’ – this is not what neoliberalism means. The criticism of economic neoliberalism is premature because the transition in Croatia is being conducted according to principles contrary to liberalism, and by a ‘ non-liberal’ state. A Hayekian state has the task to continuously create, maintain and innovate the framework which can best mobilize productive forces of the free market.
