Organophosphorus compounds for fire retardancy of wood
Efficiency of fire-retardant (FR) reactants on organophosphorus basis was evaluated and compared to worldwide used inorganic fire retardants. Fir wood (Abies alba Mill.), oak wood (Quercus robur L.) and beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) specimens were impregnated by double vacuum method with FR chemicals and tested according to DIN 4102 class B 2 standard for the usage as FR building materials. Specimens were examined before and after the leaching procedure, performed under the EN 84 conditions. Organophosphorus compounds have shown much better results of durability to water compared to boron compounds (borax - boric acid). The usage of boron compounds is limited to products for which leachable FR is acceptable since both are very water-soluble. It was estimated that for the timber wood used for outdoor structures organophosphorus compounds could certainly be recommended. Their usage for cellulose materials imparts excellent flame retardancy enabling them to meet severe safety standards and regulations.
