Shape and Structure of Buildings and Heat Loss
The structure of building skin is of high significance when considered in the context of sustainable architecture. The extent of inevitable heat loss depends on the form of building, type of materials used, and on technical solutions applied in the building shaping process. Our objective is to reduce heat loss and thus save energy required for heating, which is a direct contribution to environmental protection efforts and, more specifically, to the reduction of global warming. The paper is based on the study of building shape undertaken to determine the effect of building geometry on heat loss. Heat loss values are analysed for various forms of buildings and for different subtypes of building skin structures and materials. Correlations among individual values are established and presented. The study of smaller residential buildings provides some interesting information about the issue of thermal protection, while also offering some recommendations for building design.
