Study on evaluation of preservative efficacy, Power of Microbes in Industry and Environment
Most pharmaceutical products are susceptible to microbial contamination. Most pharmaceutical products are susceptible to microbial contamination. Microbial contamination causes product spoilage and it is potentially a serious health hazard to the patient. Contamination tends to increase during manufacturing process but also during usage of product, especially in multi-dose formulation. Antimicrobial preservatives should be included in a multi-dose formulation, even in anhydrous products, to reduce the chance of microbial survival that may be contaminated after moistening and during the use. Preservatives may be unnecessary in an ointment base because of the absence of water. For the study of preservation efficacy (Eu. Ph. 5.1.3. Efficacy of antimicrobial preservation) the following preservatives were used: chlorobutanol, parabens and benzyl alcohol. They were applied to a pharmaceutical product, an antibiotic solution for veterinary purposes for small animals, which has to be protected. Following microorganisms were used as test organisms: Staphilococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosae, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. Obtained results suggest that this product should be preserved with benzyl alcohol, because all applied microorganisms were prevented in their growth. Other preservatives didn’ t prevent the growth of tested microorganisms. In addition, the literature also recommends benzyl alcohol as preservatives in such pharmaceutical product. causes product spoilage and it is potentially a serious health hazard to the patient.
