(The Most Frequent Causes for Donor Corneas Contamination in LCEB (Lions Croatian eye bank) and Correlation to Postmortal time
AIMS: To determine the most frequent bacteria and fungi responsible for donor corneas contamination in our eye bank, to determine if postmortal time and transportation from the place of enucleation to the eye bank have any influence on contamination rate. METHODS: Microbiological analyses of turbid storage media (InOsol) RESULTS: Overall contamination rate was 2, 5% what was in good correlation to other eye bank results. St. epidermidis, MRSE and MRSA were the most frequent microbes that caused contamination. The more time pased by, the higer was the contamination rate, specially over than 12 hours postmortally. Transportation also played negative role. CONCLUSION: Ideal time would be to prepare cornea and put it in the eye bank during the first 12 hours from donors death, if possible without any transportation.
