Agent-based Electronic Market for Optical Bandwidth Trading

This article presents agent-based electronic market (e-market) that enables automated business-to-business (B2B) negotiation and sale of optical bandwidth between connectivity providers. In order to automatically reach service level agreements (SLAs), the intelligent agents (IAs) balance optical bandwidth supply and demand in the e-market using double auction market mechanisms. Introducing an expert system to reason about negotiation strategies according to the market structure and mechanism’ s declarative description, the problem of determining which negotiation strategies to use for a given mechanism is addressed. Using the rule-based expert system intelligent agents can adapt their negotiating behavior to particular market settings without hard-coded prior knowledge of the negotiation mechanism. The advantages of this approach are shown by several experiments in which different types of double auctions have been applied as negotiation mechanisms in the electronic market for optical bandwidth trading. Using agent-based simulation testbed we measured payoffs of heuristic negotiation strategies recommended by the expert system.
