The Production of Ethanol from Corn Semolina by Yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae
The molasses is still the main substrate for the production of ethanol and yeast biomass. However, the price of molasses has been increased in last few decades. For that reason the substitution of molasses by another raw materials which would justify the rentability of the process was necessary to be considered. Since, the corn is renewable raw material highly available in Croatia, the possibility for the production of ethanol and yeast biomass from corn semolina was examined. For the reason that Saccharomyces cerevisie can't use starch as a carbon source. the liquefaction and saccharification of corn semolina in various conditions and with the additions of various concentrations of commercial enzyme preparates were conducted. The highest concentration of reducing sugars (214, 5 g L-1) was achieved after saccharification with proper shaking by addition of 0, 05 mL x L-1 of α -amylase and 0, 1 mL x L-1 of amyloglucosidase preparate. Alcoholic fermentations on corn semolina hydrolysate by yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae TVG4 were performed in semiaerobic conditions on shaker or in fermentor at 30°C. The highest yield of ethanol (9, 5 % vol ) was obtained during fermentation of undiluted and unfiltered medium with 214, 5 g L-1 sugar in fermentor, after 36 hours of fermentation.
