DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS WITH CLEARANCES: A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE TIME FINITE ELEMENT METHOD AND THE PIECEWISE FULL DECOUPLING METHOD
The time finite element method and the piecewise full decoupling method are applied for obtaining the frequency response of dynamical systems with clearances under periodic excitations. The time finite element method is an implicit method which offers a simple solving the equations of motion of such systems. The stability of solutions can be readily investigated by considering Floquet theory. The piecewise full decoupling method is a new explicit integration procedure based on piecing together local linear equations of motion. Each of local linear equations of motion is solved by applying the state-space formulation while the matching of local solutions is done numerically. Close agreement is found between results obtained by both methods as well as by the published findings of the harmonic balance method.
