The Croatian-Slovenian Border: The Local Experience
In many ways, perceptions about the new political boundary do not differ very much between the Slovenian and Croatian sides of the border. The area has a long tradition of peaceful co-existence, and the new boundary is not perceived as creating reasons for territorial disputes. It is clear, however, that the changed agenda at the national level ih each of the two newly independent states has undermined economic imperatives at local and micro-regional levels. Border residents indicated awareness that, although their portion of the boundary with Slovenia has been undisputed, many of the restrictions imposed on their crossborder movement are related to other disputes on the national level.
