(Multi)fractality of physiological time-series
The measured time dependent parameters from a physiological system often possess scale-invariant properties. Examples are brain activity and heartbeat (RR intervals) variability, where fractal concept can be succesfuly applied for studying their complex underlying dynamics. Self-similarity in fluctuation pattern observed on various time scales, leads to the characteristic power-law behaviour, and the values of the scaling exponent may differ for healthy and ill state. Some results will shown on the applicability of scaling analysis, like the Hurst R/S method and the detrended fluctuation analysis, DFA, for studying fluctuation patterns of RR intervals. There is particular interest in the possibility of finding the method to distinguish healthy and deseased subjects. Results of multifractal analysis, using the method of G-moments, will be reported.
