Sažetak
Highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) has been introduced in Croatia in April 1998. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of oesophageal and oropharyngeal candidiasis (OOC), as AIDS indicator diseases (ID) in the newly diagnosed AIDS patients in Croatia and its relationship with CD4+ cell count. From 1998 to 2003, there were 91 newly diagnosed AIDS patients ( 76 male and 15 female ; age range, 20-74 years ; mean age, 43 years) treated at the University Hospital of Infectious Diseases. Patients were divided according to ID and OOC presence. In 18 patients (19, 8%) OOC was found. In 11 patients out of 18 it was the only AIDS-ID and in the 7 out of 18 another opportunistic infections were found together with OOC. The median CD4+ count of patients with OOC was 32 cells per mm&sup3 ; ; ; ; (range 2-140). Median CD4+ count in patients with other IDs (18, 7% Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, 16, 5% tuberculosis, 9, 9% cryptococcosis, 8, 8% lymphoma, 26, 3% other IDs) was 82 cells per mm&sup3 ; ; ; ; (range 1-580). Mann-Whitney test showed significant difference in CD4+ cell count between patients with OOC and those without OOC (P=0, 0324). In Croatian AIDS patients, OOC is the most prevalent ID in the HAART era, followed by Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and tuberculosis. We can conclude that OOC is a common sign of immunodeficiency in patients with AIDS in the HAART era.
