Sample preparation for TLC - Genetic algorithm-based optimization of microwave-assisted extraction

Optimization of a microwave assisted extraction (MAE) as a method for sample preparation in thin-layer chromatographic (TLC) determination of the pesticide mixture is described. The extraction was optimized regarding to the solvent amount, duration of microwave extraction and temperature. According to the proposed method, the experimental design technique was applied to design the starting experiments and the genetic algorithm (GA) was used in the optimization procedure. The goal was to test mathematical tool which could facilitate the optimization procedure. The R* optimization criterion was chosen and employed as the fitness function. Optimization procedure was tested in TLC determination of atrazine and simazine pesticides mixture through its recoveries, and satisfactory optimal, results were obtained. The GA proved to be an optimization procedure which can be used well valuable in MAE experiments.
