Hippocampal neurons in normal ageing and Alzheimer's disease
The lecture will i) present a summary of the present state of knowledge on structure and function of the human hippocampal formation, ii) give an overview on historic and more current perspectives in aging and Alzheimer's disease research, iii) highlight the reactivation of fetal plasticity mechanisms during the progression of Alzheimer's disease and, iv) discuss measurements of phosphorylated tau epitopes in the cerebrospinal fluid in the differential diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Simic would be glad to discuss these and other related issues, including the role of glial cells in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, in a less formal atmosphere.
