UTILIZATION OF ANTIEPILEPTIC DRUGS AT UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY IN DEFINED DAILY DOSES PER THOUSAND BED-DAYS DURING THE YEAR 2000
Drug utilization is defined as the marketing, distribution, prescription and use of drugs in a society with special emphasis on the resulting medical, social and economic consequences. Defined daily dose (DDD) is a unit for the measurement of drug utilization. DDD is defined as an average maintenance dose of the drug recommended on its major indication. At hospital level drug utilization is expressed as a number of DDD per thousand bed-days (DDD/1000BD) in one year. In this paper the utilization of antiepileptic drugs at University Department of Neurology, Sestre milosrdnice University Hospital during the 2000 year is presented on its three divisions: Division of Clinic Neurology (CN), Division of Vascular Neurology (VN) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). According to Anatomical and Therapeutic Classification (ATC) antiepileptic drugs (AED) are classified in the group N03. At ICU 98, 3 DDD/1000BD AED were prescribed: 77, 9 methylphenobarbital and 20, 4 carbamazepine ; at VN 38, 8 DDD/1000BD AED were prescribed: 24, 9 methylphenobarbital, 12, 5 carbamazepine and 1, 4 valproate ; at CN 54, 4 DDD/1000BD AED were prescribed: 26, 2 carbamazepine, 18, 8 methylphenobarbital, 4 lamotrigine, 3, 8 valproate, 1, 4 phenytion and 0, 2 clonazepam. Monitoring drug utilization is very useful method for providing information regarding drug-prescribing routines. It enables comparison between wards, evaluation of prescribing routine and makes basis for interventions in drug prescribing routines.
