A comparision of volatile metabolites produced by aflatoxin-tolerant and aflatoxin-susceptible peanut plants
Volatiles were characterized from aflatoxin-tolerant and aflatoxin-susceptible peanut plants. Volatiles were collected by trapping headspace volatiles using thermal desorption columns packed with Tenax TA and Carbotrap B. Columns were placed in a thermal desorption unit which injected the volatiles into a GC/MS for analysis and identification. All plants were inoculated with Aspergillus flavus NRRL 3357 (afla-toxigenic) or NRRL 1957 (non-aflatoxigenic). In a preliminary study predominant volatile metabolites common to all peanuts were 3-hexen-1-ol, (Z) ; 3-octanone ; 3-hexen-1-ol, acetate (Z) ; 1, 3-butadiene ; 1-octen-3-on ; 2-methyl ; and 1, 3-pentadiene. Volatiles associated with tolerant peanuts were cyclopropane, ethyidene ; 2-butenal ; and hexanal. Volatiles associated with susceptible peanut plants were cyclobutane, methylene ; 1, 3-butadiene, 2-methyl ; 2-butanone ; butanal, 2-methyl ; 1, 3-octadiene. The volatile profiles were different and may possibly be useful for early aflatoxin detection.
