Fungi and mycotoxins associated with pearl millet from 1996 to 2002
Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) samples collected from the 1996 to 2002 harvests were analyzed for fungi and mycotoxins. The most common fungi isolated were Fusarium chlamydosporum, F. semitectum, Curvularia spp., Alternaria spp., "Helminthosporium" spp., Aspergillus flavus, F. verticilloides and F. pseudonygamai. Less frequently found were Aspergillus niger, A. ochraceus, A. tamari, A. candidus, A. fumigatus, Cladosporium herbarum, Cerebella andropogonis, Epicoccum spp., Gloeocercospora sorghi, Penicillium spp., Phyllosticta penicillariae, Rhizopus spp., Trichoderma spp., and other fungi. Aflatoxins ranged from 0 to 87 ng/g in the field samples, and increased in storage up to 1750 ng/g depending on the year. Beauvericin was found in field samples from 23 to 1044 ng/g and during storage from 108 to 2438 ng/g. Moniliformin was found in the field samples from 0 to 175 ng/g and did not increase during storage. Negligible levels of deoxynivalenol, nivalenol, and zearalenone were detected. Fumonisins were not detected in either the field or storage.
