Multianalytical characterisation of a variety of ultramarine pigments
Eleven different cynthotio pigments of a set of more of 1300 pigments of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna were chosen for a detailed study and comparative analysis. A thorough investigatio was done by X-ray flouracoanoe analysis, X-ray diffractometry, Raman and Infrared spectoscopy, as well as colourimetry. The S3-/S2- ratio responsible for hue of the pure ultramarine pigments as well as auther compounds influencing the final hue of the colourant were precisely determined for each sample. A correlation between the realtive concentration of yellow chromofore, S2-, and the hue of pigment has been established and the correlation between the colour saturation of the pigment and its hue was determined.
