LGiSE (Liquid Gas injection Stirling Engine), a new Stirling engine concept

The paper presents the latest results of investigation on the effects of lowering the Stirling engine cold-side temperature down to finally 80K. Said effects were successively published in the proceedings of IUC Dubrovnik 1998 [1], 9th ISEC Pilanesburg 1999 [3] and 10th ISEC Osnabrück 2001 [4]. The test bed results obtained at the present time with the very new experimental Stirling PROBA2B engine [11th ISEC, Rome] shows and confirms the above observed regularity of increase of engine efficiency by lowering the engine cold-side temperature and opens the way for a numerical extrapolation of engine characteristics to lowest practicably obtainable cold-side cryogenic temperatures. The insight of the results achieved in the above research work has led to the invention of a new Stirling engine concept LGiSE (Liquid Gas injection Stirling Engine) which was materialised with the experimental Stirling engine PROBA3A. The first test bed results of the Stirling PROBA3A engine are presented in this paper. This investigation will be continued in near future. The target for the next step of this investigation programme is to experimentally estimate and approve the extrapolated engine characteristics for the cold side temperatures down to approx. 20K (cooling with liquid ydrogen) and finally to 5K (cooling with liquid helium).
