Fish-farming Jadro-Solin, Croatia: biomonitoring of recovery using biomarkers

The ubiquity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in the ayuatic environment poses many serious problems for the resource manager concerned with the protection and conservation of fishery resources. Because these pollutants are imlicated in increased tumour incidence, reduced comprehensive aquatic toxicity biomonitoring program. The aim was to study the recovery of polluted fish-farming during two years after masut spill (07.01.2002.), using well known biomarkers - EROD activity, protein titre of CYP1A, the potential of S9 fraction to bioactivate BaP to bacteria mutagens using Salmonella typhimurium reverse mutation assay and protein titre of P-glycoprotein (Pgp) which mediate multixenobiotic resistance (MXR) mechanism in the liver of trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). EROD activity showed the maximum induction in the liver of trout sampled 5 days after the masut spill. A clear dose-response relationship was observed between catalytic EROD activity, protein titre of CYP1A and metabolic activation of BaP. Similar pattern was detected in the P-gp level. Focusing on ecologically relevant biomarkers, the results are helpful in the predictive toxicity of freshwater ecosystems and in the assessment of potential hazards of contaminants on fishery resources. Finally, we have shown to prove applicability of biomarkers in biomonitoring of improvements in environmental quality after remediation activities.
