Production Costs Implementation Concept For Preliminary Design Evaluation

At present, naval architects at preliminary design stage, mainly compare design alternatives by evaluating them against significant criteria from the shipowners' point of interest, such as, speed, conditions and costs of exploitation, deadweight cargo capacity, main engine power, or similar. There are various design models. Mostly, iterative design concept against design spiral is used, where costs are calculated as function of masses, volumes or areas. However, the authors, while using the concept of "design for production", aim to implement into design the production and space factors, and also to include the interaction between product and process characteristics. To realise such requirements, they introduced within the preliminary design such evaluation criteria as to be of benefit looking from the shipyard's standpoint of view. The paper objective is to estimate which of the design alternatives is more convenient for production within each particular shipyard. Furthermore, it aims to detect which alternative is more compatible with shipyard facility capacities, existing automation level, production lines layout and organisation. Therefore, authors defined production costs based criteria for preliminary design evaluation while also considering suitability of particular solutions to the shipyard. Besides defining such criteria, the authors also presented where and how these new criteria are introduced into the preliminary design stage and also within design process flow diagram. In such manner, in an early design stage should be possible to determine and select a particular design alternative, which will be of benefit to the shipyard. Those should lead to overall production costs reduction, which means towards higher shipyard's profitability. At the same time using such approach it is pointed out which are the critical locations within shipyard's production process, and therefore where is necessary to contribute for their possible improvement. Following previous analysis, it is proposed to further improve such design model and to develop relevant pondering methodology for proposed criteria.
