Influence of Microwave Exposure on the Rats Peripheral Blood Parameters: Studies of Cell Response

The aim of the study was to determine the specific biomarkers of non-ionizing, non-thermal electromagnetic field irradiation (2450 MHz microwave radiation) on quantitative parameters of peripheral blood cells in Wistar rats. The animals used were male, 13 weeks old withaverage value of 350 gr. body weight. One group of rats, group G2 was exposed daily to microwaves, 5 days/week/2 hour/day at average power density of 10 mW/cm2. The experiment lasted for 4 weeks. Well matched, non-exposed animals (G1)served as control group. Peripheral blood samples was taken immediately at the end of the 1st, 8th, 16th and30th day of irradiation. The total leukocyte number, differential leukocyte count in both, absolute and ralative proportion, as well as the total number of peripheral erythrocytes in the G2 experimental group, were compared with the same parameters of the non-exposed group G1. The total number of leukocytes and the total number of lymphocytes in the G2 group was slightly decreased at each defined time of irradiation, in comparison with group G1. Relative proportion of polymorphonuclear granolocytes in exposed group did not differ from the values obtained in the control group. The total number of peripheral blood erythrocytes in the experimental animals was found to be slighltly increased after indicated irradiation period, compared to the number of erythrocytes in the control animals. In the experimental condition, a slight effect of microwave radiation was observed on the examined peripheral blood parameters in the irradiated group of rats, compared to the non-exposed group of animals.
