The effects of geomagnetic disturbance on power transmission systems in mid latitudes

In power transmission system in Croatia there are around 10% of failures per year with unidentified causes. The magnetic storms on the surface of the Sun are known to afflict electric power systems by causing the disturbances in geomagnetic field and producing geomagnetically induced currents. Disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field (geomagnetic field) can be one of these unindentified causes for some of these failures. This paper will show that there are certain facts in system failure analysis which points out that cause of some failures in mid latitudes can be explained by geomagnetic disturbance influence.
