Design of the final wall blasting for the Croatian motorway project

The article describes the experience in blasting while obtaining the final slopes on Croatian Motorway Project. Several contour blasting methods are described and testing of airdeck method at the quarry. The alignment of motorway passing through predominately Karst terrain, in which prevails limestone and dolomite with numerous caverns, often filled with terra rosa and clay sediments This layers are characterized with frequently changes of rock material properties in very short distances. Due to extreme dynamics of works with daily blasting quantities of 50000 m3 on the alignment, it occurred that the blasted material would lay unexcavated for months, and the optimum option for the contour blasting had to be found.
